Chinese is not a single language but a family of languages – not dialects – spoken by over one billion people. There are between seven and thirteen main regional groups of Chinese, of which the most common are Mandarin (about 850 million), Wu (90 million), Min (70 million) and Cantonese (70 million).

The standard form of spoken Chinese is Standard Mandarin based on the Beijing dialect, which is part of a larger group of North-Eastern and South-Western dialects, often taken as a separate language. Standard Mandarin is the official language of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). It is also one of four official languages of Singapore. Chinese (or Standard Mandarin) is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Standard Cantonese is also a common language in some overseas communities and it remains one of the official languages of Hong Kong (along with English) and of Macau (along with Portuguese). Hokkien, part of the Min language group, is widely spoken in southern Fujian, in neighbouring Taiwan - where it is known as Taiwanese or Hoklo - and in Southeast Asia, e.g. Singapore and Malaysia.

Interestingly, the earliest recognisable examples of written Chinese date from the Shang dynasty in 1500-950 BC and were inscribed on ox scapulae and turtle shells - "oracle bones".
