Definitions:

Simultaneous interpreting: interpreters translate in parallel with the speaker via headphones and from soundproof booths usually at large gatherings Simultaneous interpreters tend to work in pairs, rotating every 20 minutes or so, due to the intense concentration required.

Consecutive interpreting: the interpreter takes notes and then translates at regular intervals what the speaker has just said. This method is used when there are only a few languages involved, because of the need for the speaker to pause for the interpreters to deliver. There is no need for special equipment.

In advance of the day:

Factors to consider:

  • Conference interpreters are in great demand and so we recommend that you book them as far in advance as possible (preferably 3 months).
  • If you require simultaneous interpreters you will almost certainly need to book two for each language combination.
  • Interpreters are booked per 7-hour working day (with one hour for lunch and refreshment breaks).
  • The interpreters may require accommodation

    Information we require from you:

  • the subject matter under discussion (so that we can allocate the most experienced interpreters in that field for the job).
  • relevant reference material (speakers’ notes or speeches, PowerPoint presentations, glossaries, delegate lists etc) well in advance of the event to help the interpreters prepare.
  • the location of the venue.
  • contact name and number for the day.

    For conferences with simultaneous interpreters, the equipment required will depend on:

  • the number of delegates expected and the number requiring interpreting services.
  • the layout /style of the conference: whether it is going to be boardroom or theatre-style; amount of audience input expected.
  • whether there is an installed sound system at the venue.
  • whether there is enough space for booths. (We will send one of our technicians to do a site visit if required.)

    On the day:

  • Check that the interpreters are happy and have everything they need (reference material, water etc).
  • Ensure they have regular refreshment breaks (and lunch if it is a full day).
  • Speakers should be aware of how to work with an interpreter. (We can provide coaching, if required)
