Translation quality standards – do they matter?

Prior to 2006, various translation quality standards existed. However, they focused more on the translation process rather than on linguistic quality. Client requirements were not considered. In 2006, individual national standards were replaced by the pan-European BS EN 15038 (Translation Services). It defines quality as conformance to customer requirements, reduces ambiguity through the clear definition of terms, and clarifies roles and responsibilities (of both the translation service provider and client). Medical and pharmaceutical companies need to be able to rely on their translation suppliers. Until recently it has been difficult to differentiate between those who perform well and those who do not, other than by trial and error.
